BROWN V. BOARD 50 YEARS LATER
Asian-American and Latino Perspectives on Integration
DATE: Thursday, February 17
TIME: 6:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton Street
May 17, 2004, marked the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board, the historic Supreme Court decision that paved the way for the desegregation of public schools and facilities. In commemoration of this historic decision, the Illinois Humanities Council and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture is co-sponsoring a free event entitled "Asian-American and Latino Perspectives on Integration."
School integration has largely been seen as an issue affecting blacks and whites. This roundtable will discuss integration from the point of view of Asian-Americans and Latinos. Participants include Gerald Torres, H.O. Head Centennial Professor in Real Property Law, School of Law, University of Texas at Austin and co-author with Lani Guinier of The Miner's Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy (2002); Professor Vijay Prashad, International Studies Program, Trinity College and author of The Karma of Brown People (2000); and Professor Mae Ngai, Department of History, University of Chicago and author of Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America, 1924-1965 (2004). Professor Sumi K. Cho, DePaul University College of Law, will moderate this panel.
