Within Our Gates (1920) is legendary African American director Oscar Micheaux's response to the racism portrayed in D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. The film will be shown at the Film Studies Center in a restored print from the Library of Congress along with original piano accompaniment. Pearl Bowser of African Diaspora Images and Jacqueline Stewart, Associate Professor, Department of English and Cinema and Film Studies will lead a discussion of the film. Reception to follow.
