Dissertation Fellowship 2009-2010

The Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago invites applications for the 2009-2010 Dissertation Fellowship, which begins September 29, 2009 and ends June 30, 2010.  Qualified Ph.D. candidates at the University of Chicago from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.  For a description of the Center’s mission: http://csrpc.uchicago.edu

Description: The goal of the fellowship is to enable an outstanding doctoral student interested in the study of race and ethnicity to devote his or her full energies to the completion of the dissertation.  The fellowship carries a stipend of $18,000 for the academic year, a $1000 travel and research budget, and will cover advanced residence tuition, fees, and basic university student health insurance, if needed.  The successful applicant will be provided with an office and use of a computer at the Center.  The fellow will be expected to be in residence during the award year, present his or her work at one of the Reproduction of Race and Racial Ideologies Workshop meetings and to actively participate in the workshop and other activities sponsored by the Race Center.  The fellow may not engage in any remunerative activity, including teaching either on or off campus, while holding the award, and will be ineligible for further internal University funding from any source, including teaching appointments, if the degree is not completed within six months of the end of the CSRPC fellowship tenure.

Eligibility:  University of Chicago doctoral students who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. but the dissertation, including formal admission to candidacy, and expect to complete all field work by September 29, 2009 are eligible to apply.  Any dissertation that has as its central focus issues related to race or racialized groups will be considered.  Special consideration will be given to projects that attend to the intersection of race or ethnicity with other identities such as gender, class, sexuality, and nationality.

Application Process:  The application should include 3 paper copies and 1 digital file (PDF or Word Document) of the following:

1) A formal letter of application describing the candidate’s research interests (2 single-spaced pages);

2) A dissertation prospectus (5 single-spaced pages) approved by the dissertation committee and including an outline of the dissertation, the significance of the study, the research design, and the schedule for completion;

3) A two-page Curriculum vitae; and

4) Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the dissertation supervisor.  Letters may be mailed or emailed from faculty members directly to jessicas@uchicago.edu.

Application Deadline: All materials must be received by Jessica Sparks at the address below and via email (jessicas@uchicago.edu) by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 20, 2009.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. Graduate Student Research & Travel Grants

The Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago invites applications for Graduate Research and Travel Grants for the academic year 2009-2010. Description: The goal of the grant is to support the research efforts of outstanding graduate students interested in the study of race and ethnicity. The grant may only be used for expenses associated with a clearly defined research project. Activities that will be considered for funding include, but are not limited to, travel-related expenses (transportation and lodging) associated with field or primary archival research, transcription costs, duplication services, or the acquisition of data sets for quantitative analysis. Preference will be given to dissertation-related research, however, other projects will also be considered. Grants of up to $2500 will be awarded to successful candidates. These grants may be used to supplement other small grants. The funds will be available for distribution after May 1, 2009. Travel must be completed and all research- and travel-related receipts submitted by December 31, 2009.

Eligibility: Open to University of Chicago graduate or professional students that are in good standing.

Application Process: All applications should include 3 paper copies and 1 digital copy (PDF or MS Word format) of the following:

1.    a grant proposal not to exceed two (2) single-spaced pages that should provide a description of the proposed research project or purpose of travel, travel dates, research to be accomplished during travel period, and the relevance of the project to the study of race and ethnicity;

2.    a one-page detailed budget, including other sources of funding if relevant, and an explanation of how the requested funding will be used;

3.    a two-page curriculum vitae; and

4.    one letter of recommendation under separate cover from the dissertation chair (may be emailed directly from faculty members).

Requirements: Grant recipients will be expected to:

1.    submit a 1-2 page summary of the outcomes of the research;

2.    actively participate or present their work in the Reproduction of Race and Racial Ideologies Workshop and other activities sponsored by the Race Center during the 2009-2010 academic year; and

3.    acknowledge the support of CSRPC in the dissertation and/or any research publications that may result from this grant.
