Welcoming Puerto Rican Scholars and Artists
Hurricane Irma and Maria Relief Initiative
University of Chicago program, initiated by the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, to support scholars and artists affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Nine undergraduates and four graduate students will spend spring quarter at the University of Chicago. They will be joined by four visiting faculty during summer quarter. On-campus residencies have been extended to two visiting artists, who will arrive in May.
Undergraduate Students
Nine visiting undergraduates arrived on campus Sunday, March 25, in time to start classes on March 26. Students will stay in college housing. Each has been paired with a peer ambassador from their house to welcome them and help integrate them into campus life.
Visiting undergraduates include: Camila Osoria Mendez (History), Daniel Ramos (History), Elisa Figueroa Narvaez (Political Science), Gabriel Manzano Nieves (History), Kevin Daniel Santiago Morales (Industrial Microbiology), Robinson De Jesus Romero (Psychology), Shakyra Sanchez (Psychology), Yanitza Cruz Crespo (Information and Journalism), and Yosef Torres (Sociology).
Graduate Students
On April 1, four graduate students arrive to continue their dissertation work at UChicago. In addition to a faculty mentor, each student will have dedicated work space in the Regenstein or a relevant laboratory. Through UChicagoGRAD, they will be paired with peer ambassadors in their divisions and will be extended invitations to upcoming conferences and workshops that are germane to their scholarship.
Students, their fields of study and UChicago mentors are: Miguel Rosario in Comparative Human Development (Micere Keels), Norma Rodriguez-Santiago in English and Film (Danielle Roper), Shadey Mercado-Perez in History (Kathleen Belew), and Yoana Guzman in Microbiology (Jean Greenberg).
Due to conflicting academic obligations, Ms. Guzman will arrive on May 15 and study here until June 30.
Faculty
Four faculty will arrive during summer quarter to continue their work at the University of Chicago. Each has been paired with a faculty sponsor. We are excited by the opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship created by this program, and encourage you to get in touch with these individuals or their faculty sponsors to learn more about their research projects.
Visiting faculty include: Don Walicek in English/Linguistics (Sali Mufwene), Eric Lamore in English (Ken Warren), Evaluz Cotto Quijano in Business Administration (Kimberly Kay Hoang – Sociology), and Matthew Goodwin in English (Edgar Garcia).
Throughout the spring and summer quarters, there will be a variety of opportunities for you to meet with our guests. The CSRPC and CI+I will host welcome mixers for students, their peer ambassadors, faculty mentors, and CSRPC affiliated faculty during the first few weeks of the quarter. The Center for Identity + Inclusion has planned a series of drop-in events through spring to support students getting acclimated to our community. We hope you will take these opportunities to greet and welcome visiting students, scholars, and artists, as well as create your own opportunities for connection and engagement. Artists
Arts + Public Life, in partnership with The Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, welcomes artists Marisol Plard Narváez and Glorimar Marrero Sánchez to Chicago this May, 2018. The two artists have been invited from Puerto Rico to the University of Chicago campus for a three month residency from May through July, 2018.
Collaborators in this effort include CSRPC faculty affiliates, the Center for Identity + Inclusion, the College, the Office of Admissions, UChicagoGRAD, Campus and Student Life, the Office of the Provost, UChicago Arts, and the Graham School.
