Artists Programs

Artists-in-Residence

CSRPC’s long-standing artists-in-residence program evolved into an on-going collaboration with the University’s Arts + Public Life Initiative (APL). Since 2011, the CSRPC and APL have supported individual artists through the annual10-month Artists-in-Residence program, open to Chicago-based artists and groups whose work explores issues of race, politics and culture. This program seeks to advance the opportunities available to artists who are underrepresented in the Chicago and national arts scenes.

The residency is for mid-career artists working in various media and disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, performance, music and alternate mediums. Residents selected for the program will explore ways in which their work can impact campus, community, and city alike.

The "Artist/Poet for the People" Practitioner Fellowship is co-hosted by the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture and the Pozen Center Human Rights Lab at the University of Chicago. As part of their fellowships, each practitioner completes a fellowship project of their own design that explores an aspect of the carceral system, curate their own series of public events, and participate in various community and university engagements throughout the year.
