Ten years ago, on November 22, 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was gunned down by a Cleveland police officer.
In 2016, the gazebo near which Tamir was killed was slated for demolition and erasure. However, thanks to the tireless determination of Tamir’s mother, Samaria, the gazebo was salvaged and entrusted to artist Theaster Gates who has kept it at Chicago’s Rebuild Foundation where he serves as director.
The ten-year anniversary of Tamir’s death will be marked by a day of remembrance that will offer tribute to Tamir and other victims of police violence through music, poetry, art, storytelling, and film.
There will be two programs for the day and all are welcome and encouraged to attend both.
There will first be a gathering to share reflections and create art in tribute to Tamir and other victims of police brutality.
A film screening will follow of For Our Children, a powerful portrayal of youth impacted by systemic violence, echoing the urgent call for justice that Tamir Rice’s story inspires.
Together, let us reflect, create, and remember the power of resilience as we work toward collective healing and accountability.

CSRPC and the Rebuild Foundation are copresenting this event.
